The baby’s finally down. The house is quiet. You have somewhere between ten minutes and two hours before it starts again. And you’re standing in the kitchen frozen because you have no idea what you actually want to do.
This is decision fatigue. Postpartum edition. And the fix is not “be more productive.” The fix is a menu.
Here are seven options. Pick one. Or none. You’re allowed.
Why decision fatigue hits harder postpartum
Every day is a thousand tiny decisions. Should I feed her now? Is this cry hunger or gas? Should I put her down or wear her? What should I eat? Did I take the vitamin? Should I nap?
By the time you have a free 10 minutes, your decision-making capacity is gone. Not because you’re weak, because you’ve used it all up on infant care.
The menu below removes the decision. Just pick one. That’s the whole thing.
Option 1: sit down with a cold drink (nothing else)
A glass of ice water. A cold seltzer. A cold coffee from earlier that you never finished. Whatever’s cold and drinkable.
Sit down. Actually sit. Feet up if possible. Drink it slowly. Look at nothing in particular. That’s the whole option.
If you can only do one thing in the ten minutes, this is it. Hydration plus rest plus an intentional pause. You’ll feel different when the baby wakes up.
Option 2: the 5-minute stretch on the floor (specific sequence)
Lie flat on the floor (yes, the floor). One knee bent, foot flat on the ground, other leg long. Switch. Both knees to chest, gentle rock side to side. Feet up the wall for two minutes. Roll to your side, sit up slowly.
That’s it. Five minutes on the floor. Your back thanks you. Your hips thank you. Your nervous system thanks you.
Option 3: text one adult who isn’t your partner
Not your partner. Anyone else. A friend from before. A sister. A mom-friend. Text one sentence. “How are you?” or “Thinking of you” or “This week is hard.”
You don’t need a reply. You need the reminder that other adults exist outside your house.
Option 4: look out the window for a full minute
Sixty seconds. Look out the window at whatever’s there. Trees. Neighbors. Cars. A bird if you’re lucky.
Your eyes have been on a baby’s face for hours. Or on a screen. Both of those exhaust the visual system. A minute of middle-distance looking resets it.
Option 5: eat something you actually want to eat
Not the leftover baby-food puree. Not the piece of toast you burned. Something you actually want.
Cheese and crackers. A bowl of fruit. Peanut butter on a spoon. A cookie. The specific thing you’ve been thinking about.
Eat it sitting down. Chew it. Taste it.
Free · takes ten seconds
Whatever time you have today, it counts.
Tell The Window how many minutes and how many hands you have free, and it picks one small thing for you: a stretch, a shower, a page of a book, ten minutes of nothing. A jar counts them up over the week.
No email needed. Works on your phone, one-handed.
Option 6: nap (yes, still option one for many days)
“Sleep when the baby sleeps” is annoying advice because it’s often impossible. But if this is one of the days you can, you should.
Nap. Set an alarm if you’re worried. Twenty minutes is enough to recover. Ninety minutes is a full sleep cycle. Both help. Don’t argue with yourself about it.
Option 7: do one small thing that’s yours (a book page, a puzzle piece)
Something that has nothing to do with the baby or the house or the to-do list. Read one page of a book. Do one puzzle piece. Journal one sentence. Practice one chord on the guitar you haven’t touched in a year.
The point is: something that’s yours. Something that says I still have inner life, even if it’s smaller than it used to be.
Why productive is not the goal here
The temptation is to use these 10 minutes to fold laundry, wash bottles, empty the dishwasher, respond to emails. To catch up.
Don’t. You will never catch up. There is no bottom to the postpartum to-do list. The dishes will always be there.
These 10 minutes are for you. Not the household. Not the baby (who is currently asleep and doesn’t need you). You.
Free · five minutes on Sunday night
Five minutes on Sunday night, and the whole week is dressed.
Tap the kind of day each day is and The Sunday Reset lays out seven outfits, one window of time for you each day, and the three things that matter this week. Print it, or have it emailed.
Free. Made for the mornings when choosing is the hard part.
The one thing to never do in the first 10 minutes (spoiler: scroll)
Do not pick up your phone. Not to check email. Not to open Instagram. Not to just look at one thing.
Ten minutes on your phone leaves you more tired than when you started. Your nervous system doesn’t rest during scrolling. It gets more activated.
If you have to look at the phone, do it in the last two minutes. Not the first eight.
How to make the menu work on the hardest days
Write the seven options on a sticky note and put it where you stand when the baby goes down. The fridge, the kitchen counter, the back of the nursery door. The whole point is that you should not have to remember the list.
Some days you will pick nothing and stand there anyway. That is also allowed. The menu is an offer, not another thing to comply with.
And if a stretch of days goes by where nothing on this list sounds like anything at all, where the fog doesn’t lift and joy feels out of reach, please tell someone. Your OB, your midwife, your doctor, a friend who will follow up. That heaviness is common and it is treatable, and you should not have to carry it quietly.
Feel Your Best, Give Your Best. You Matter Too.
You get to decide what these 10 minutes are for. Save this menu. Screenshot it. Come back to it the next time the baby’s down and you’re standing frozen in the kitchen.
If you want more small practices like these, the free 5-Day Challenge gives you one a day for five days. And if getting dressed has become its own decision-fatigue problem, the free Postpartum Lookbook takes that decision off your plate too.
You’re doing the work of two people, mama. Ten minutes is not too much to ask for.
