Becoming a new mom is a beautiful yet challenging journey, especially when you’re breastfeeding. Balancing the demands of a newborn while taking care of your own needs can feel overwhelming. That’s why self-care is crucial during the postpartum period. Here are some absolutely amazing self-care essentials for postpartum breastfeeding moms that will help you feel supported, nourished, and rejuvenated.
1. Comfortable Nursing Bras
A good nursing bra is a game-changer. Look for bras that offer easy access for breastfeeding, good support, and are made of soft, breathable materials. Avoid underwires in the early days as they can cause discomfort and clogged milk ducts. Brands like Bravado and Medela offer excellent options.
2. Nursing Pillows
Nursing pillows like the Boppy or My Brest Friend provide the necessary support to keep both you and your baby comfortable during feeding sessions. They help position your baby correctly, reducing strain on your back, neck, and arms.
3. Hydration Essentials
Breastfeeding can make you incredibly thirsty. Keep a large water bottle handy at all times to ensure you’re staying hydrated. Consider bottles with time markers to remind you to drink water throughout the day.
4. Healthy Snacks
Breastfeeding moms need extra calories and nutrients. Stock up on healthy snacks like nuts, fruit, yogurt, and granola bars. These are easy to grab and eat, even with a baby in your arms.
5. Nipple Cream
Nipple soreness is common in the early days of breastfeeding. Use a lanolin-based cream or an organic nipple balm to soothe and protect your skin. Lansinoh and Earth Mama offer popular and effective options.
6. Breast Pads
Leakage can be a concern for breastfeeding moms. Invest in reusable or disposable breast pads to keep your clothes dry and your skin comfortable. Brands like Bamboobies and Lansinoh offer excellent choices.
7. Postpartum Recovery Kit
A postpartum recovery kit with essentials like perineal spray, witch hazel pads, and sitz bath herbs can help you heal more comfortably. Frida Mom and Earth Mama provide comprehensive kits designed specifically for postpartum recovery.
8. Comfy Loungewear
Comfortable, easy-access loungewear is essential for new moms. Look for soft, stretchy fabrics and tops with nursing access. Brands like Kindred Bravely and Hatch offer stylish and practical options.
9. Breastfeeding Apps
Track your breastfeeding sessions, diaper changes, and sleep patterns with apps like Baby Tracker or Feed Baby. These apps can help you stay organized and provide useful insights into your baby’s routine.
10. Supportive Footwear
Good footwear can make a huge difference, especially if you’re dealing with postpartum swelling or sore feet. Look for supportive, cushioned shoes or slippers that provide comfort and stability.
11. Sleep Aids
Sleep can be elusive with a newborn. Consider white noise machines or soothing sound apps to help you and your baby sleep better. A comfortable eye mask and blackout curtains can also make a significant difference.
12. Handheld Massager
A handheld massager can provide relief from sore muscles and tension. Use it on your back, shoulders, and neck to alleviate discomfort from holding and feeding your baby.
13. Herbal Teas
Herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint, and lactation blends can help you relax and support milk production. Brands like Traditional Medicinals offer teas specifically formulated for breastfeeding moms.
14. Self-Care Journal
Journaling can be a therapeutic way to process your thoughts and emotions. Keep a self-care journal to track your mood, gratitude, and any concerns you may have. This practice can provide clarity and emotional relief.
15. Aromatherapy
Essential oils like lavender, chamomile, and frankincense can promote relaxation and reduce stress. Use a diffuser or apply diluted oils to your wrists and temples for a calming effect.
