From the comments, and I have thought it in front of my own wardrobe: “I have a closet full of clothes and absolutely nothing to wear.” The cure for that sentence is not more clothes. It is fewer, chosen so that every one goes with every other and every top opens. This post is the smallest version of that idea I know how to make: ten pieces, ten outfits, all of it in cream, brown, grey and black, and all of it pictured below.
The ten: a grey-striped shirt, a brown-striped shirt, a cream polo knit, a black clip-down nursing tank, a cream slip skirt, grey wide-leg jeans, white linen shorts, one striped scarf, white sneakers and tan sandals. That is a week and a half of getting dressed, and it fits in one bag. I packed almost exactly this for a long weekend with a newborn and a toddler and did not once stand in front of a wardrobe.

1. The striped shirt with the slip skirt
The grey-striped button-down tucked loosely into the cream slip skirt, the striped scarf, white sneakers. Three buttons from the top is the feed. Sneakers with a slip skirt is the trick that lets you walk a pram in it.

2. The polo knit with the slip skirt
The cream polo knit over the slip skirt, the scarf, white sneakers. The polo placket opens and the knit lifts over the tank underneath. All cream is braver than I usually am; the dark tank under it is where a mark goes.

3. The brown shirt with the slip skirt and sandals
The brown-striped shirt over the slip skirt, the scarf, tan crossover sandals. The darkest top on the list, so the one for the leaking weeks. The dinner outfit of the ten.

4. The brown shirt open over the tank with grey jeans
The black clip-down nursing tank, grey wide-leg jeans, the brown shirt worn open over it, the scarf, white sneakers. The shirt is the cover, the tank is the feed. The school-run outfit.

5. The polo knit with linen shorts
The cream polo knit, white linen shorts, the scarf, white sneakers. For the warm morning that turns cool. The knit lifts; the shorts have a soft waist that sits above a scar.

The Nursing Mama Fashion Commandments
Twelve rules I wish someone had told me postpartum. Print them. Screenshot them. Live by them.
- Nursing bra always. Regular bras become instruments of pain the day letdown surprises you.
- Nursing pads on your body + a spare pair in your bag. Every single time you leave the house. No exceptions.
- Extra top in your bag — for YOU, not the baby. Because leaks, spit-up, and coffee-spills don’t care about your outfit plan.
- If it takes more than 5 minutes to figure out how to nurse or pump in it, it’s not the right outfit today. Feeding access is comfort. Comfort is not optional.
- Belt under the bust (empire) or below the belly with drape — never at the belly button. Your postpartum body deserves flattery, not compression.
- Comfortable waistband is non-negotiable. Elastic, wrap, or pull-on. Zippers are a Sunday-only luxury for now.
- Dark tones, prints, or textures — not thin light solids. Because letdown marks are real and you deserve clothes that don’t advertise them.
- Machine-washable everything. Dry-clean is not real-mama fashion. If it can’t survive a spit-up rinse, it’s not in rotation.
- Cross-body bag only. Hands stay free for the carrier, the toddler, the coffee, the door, the meltdown.
- Comfortable shoes always. You’re carrying a car seat and a diaper bag. This is not the season for a heel you can’t run in.
- Get dressed BEFORE the kids see you if you can. It changes the whole day — for them and for you.
- One accessory — earrings, a lip color, a scarf — counts as “put together.” That’s the whole game. You get to feel like yourself again.
10. The brown shirt with linen shorts
The brown-striped shirt over white linen shorts, the scarf, tan sandals. The evening version of outfit eight. Dark near the face is kinder at dusk than you would think, with the cream scarf to lift it.

Ten pieces. I counted them again while writing this and it still surprises me that a week and a half of outfits fits in a weekend bag, every one of them opening, none of them a nursing top. The closet full of nothing was never a shortage. It was clothes that did not talk to each other, and ten that do is the whole fix.
If you want the same idea with every season covered, the Year Round Capsule is fifty-six pieces and two hundred outfits, laid out and then worn, with three pictures of you in them on the house. If you want to build your own ten from your own drawers, the DIY breastfeeding capsule is the afternoon in seven steps. And if you would rather someone picked from your closet each morning, that is Anah inside the Atelier.
Ten pieces, one bag, ten mornings decided. The focus is on you, mama.
