Are nursing tops worth it?
Before we jump into the details, let’s answer the most common question, “are nursing tops worth it?.” The simple answer is yes. A good well-fitted nursing top provides comfort, support, and ease to feed your child wherever you like.
Breastfeeding-friendly gowns, tops, and dresses make nighttime feeding more relaxed. All you need is to be clever to choose the suitable cuts according to your body to look trendy.
Types of Breastfeeding tops
Nursing tops allow you to feed your baby without taking off your shirt. They have openings that make breastfeeding easier without exposing too much skin. Here are a few types of nursing tops
Dropdown snap button tops
A dropdown flap with snap buttons is one of the most common styles in nursing tops. It has snap buttons on the shoulders and a modesty panel on the inner side to ensure minimal skin exposure.
Such tops have buttons on both sides for easy tandem feeding. You can find this design in different colors and patterns. Choose the one that suits your style, and you are good to go.
Nursing tops with zippers
Zipper tops are tremendously functional. Such tops have zips at a horizontal angle on top of the breast. You can unzip as much as you want and feed your little one anywhere.
Button up tops
They are essential in your wardrobe because of the button-up feature. Luckily front button shirts are in fashion these days. You will get plenty of options other than the classic flannel collared tops. Here are a few styles that you can choose from
- Henley shirts: These are collar-less polo shirts with 2-5 buttons on the front. The best thing about them is their versatility. You can style these shirts and accessorize them to look chic yet comfortable.
- Tunics: Tunics are another way to look stylish while keeping practicality in mind. You can pair them with leggings or wear them as it is during summers. Trendy boots or wedges will definitely add an extra oomph to your outfit.
- Blouses: You can look for flowy blouses with buttons on the front. Blouses are easily matched and paired with skirts, pants, and denim jeans.
- Collared tops: You don’t always need to go for professional business-looking button-down shirts. Denim and silk shirts with funky prints also make a great statement.
Nursing tops with a lift up
This style has a double layer over the bust. You can lift up the top layer for feeding. The best part is that there are no hooks, buttons, or zips involved, making them an easy option for nursing.
Surplice Wrap nursing top
The surplice is a faux wrap style. It appears to have wrapped the top around your waist, but it is a crossover v neckline that you can pull aside for feeding.
Side seam nursing access
Side seams nursing tops have zips hidden on the sides of the dress. It is a clever way to cover the zips and provide comfort and ease to feed your child effortlessly.
Cross over nursing tops
It is one of the most popular styles of nursing tops. The crossover neckline gives a flattering look to your bust while providing easy access. You can lift up the top layer and pull aside the lower one to feed discreetly.

The Nursing Mama Fashion Commandments
Twelve rules I wish someone had told me postpartum. Print them. Screenshot them. Live by them.
- Nursing bra always. Regular bras become instruments of pain the day letdown surprises you.
- Nursing pads on your body + a spare pair in your bag. Every single time you leave the house. No exceptions.
- Extra top in your bag — for YOU, not the baby. Because leaks, spit-up, and coffee-spills don’t care about your outfit plan.
- If it takes more than 5 minutes to figure out how to nurse or pump in it, it’s not the right outfit today. Feeding access is comfort. Comfort is not optional.
- Belt under the bust (empire) or below the belly with drape — never at the belly button. Your postpartum body deserves flattery, not compression.
- Comfortable waistband is non-negotiable. Elastic, wrap, or pull-on. Zippers are a Sunday-only luxury for now.
- Dark tones, prints, or textures — not thin light solids. Because letdown marks are real and you deserve clothes that don’t advertise them.
- Machine-washable everything. Dry-clean is not real-mama fashion. If it can’t survive a spit-up rinse, it’s not in rotation.
- Cross-body bag only. Hands stay free for the carrier, the toddler, the coffee, the door, the meltdown.
- Comfortable shoes always. You’re carrying a car seat and a diaper bag. This is not the season for a heel you can’t run in.
- Get dressed BEFORE the kids see you if you can. It changes the whole day — for them and for you.
- One accessory — earrings, a lip color, a scarf — counts as “put together.” That’s the whole game. You get to feel like yourself again.
