10 Small Joys to Practice in the Postpartum Fog

10 Small Joys to Practice in the Postpartum Fog: the outfits in this post, nursing-friendly and postpartum-friendly.

In the fog of the first months, big joy is asking too much. Nobody’s throwing their head back laughing. Nobody’s dancing in the kitchen with abandon. Nobody’s living their best life.

But small joy is possible. A specific song. The weight of the baby asleep on you. Hot tea with milk.

This post is a collection of small joys other mamas found. Not as a checklist, but as permission to find your own.

Why small joy is the only joy that fits

The nervous system in the postpartum period is on high alert. Your body is scanning for danger, for the baby’s needs, for what could go wrong. It doesn’t have bandwidth for the peak experiences you had before.

Small joy fits. It doesn’t ask you to leave your alertness. It just visits, briefly, and reminds you that pleasure is still possible.

Don’t wait for big joy. Notice the small ones.

Joy 1: the morning light through one specific window

There’s usually one window in your house where the morning light comes in a specific way. Golden. Long. Slow.

Find it. Sit in it for one minute. Let it be on your face. Let it be on the baby if the baby’s with you.

The morning light does something for the human nervous system that no supplement can replicate. Free. Available. Small.

Joy 2: the song you play every time you nurse

Pick one song. Play it every time you nurse. After a few days, your body starts to associate the song with the settling of the nursing session, the milk letting down, the shoulders dropping.

It becomes a learned joy. The first notes and your body relaxes. A tiny nervous-system gift.

Joy 3: the weight of the baby against your chest

This is the joy that’s easiest to miss because it’s constant.

Once a day, notice the weight of the baby against you. Really notice. Feel the specific pressure. The warmth. The way their body fits against yours.

You will not have this specific weight and warmth for long. Notice it now.

Joy 4: a hot drink that you make instead of buy

The joy is in the making. The kettle. The measuring. The steep or the pour. The waiting.

Making a hot drink is a five-minute meditation you can do without knowing it’s a meditation. The joy is not just the drink, it’s the ritual of making it.

Joy 5: one person’s voice on a podcast that feels like company

Pick one podcast. One host whose voice you like. Play them while you nurse or fold laundry or do dishes.

It’s not the content that matters. It’s the voice. A human voice, keeping you company in a house that’s suddenly very quiet or very loud (both, weirdly, at the same time).

Joy 6: the five-second look at the moon

If you’re up at night, which you are, a lot, walk to a window. Look at the moon. Five seconds.

The moon is a joy that’s been there forever, that other tired mothers have looked at at 3am, that connects you to every mama who’s ever been up in the night with a baby.

Joy 7: a photo you didn’t take for anyone else

Not for Instagram. Not for the group chat. Not for the grandparents.

A photo of the baby’s foot. Or the light in the kitchen. Or your own hand holding a mug. A photo for you. Nobody else.

Save it in a specific folder. Look at it sometimes.

Joy 8: the specific fold of a soft blanket

There’s usually a blanket in the house that folds a specific way that’s satisfying. A soft one. A well-loved one.

Fold it. Refold it. Something about the fold is the joy: the small precision, the specific texture, the tiny order in a house that’s mostly chaos.

Joy 9: the way the baby smells (yes, still)

The newborn smell fades. Get it while it’s there.

Nose in the top of their head. Deep breath. Let it be as much of a hit as it wants to be.

Nobody manufactures this scent. It’s real. It’s chemically bonding you to your baby. And it’s a small joy that costs nothing.

Joy 10: a moment when nobody needs anything from you

They will come. Rare and short. But they come.

The baby is asleep. Nobody is texting. The dishes can wait. And for a full minute, nobody in the world needs anything from you.

Notice it. Let yourself register it. That is a moment of your life. Small. Real. Yours.

How to notice joy when your nervous system is fried

If joy feels absent, that’s usually not because joy is gone. It’s because your nervous system is too activated to register it.

The fix is not to try harder to feel joy. The fix is to calm the nervous system first: slow breath, warm water on your neck, feet on the ground, weight of a blanket. Then look for the joy after.

Joy visits calm nervous systems. Not the other way around.

And if the fog stays thick for weeks, if nothing on this list registers at all, that’s worth naming out loud to your doctor, your midwife, or someone who loves you. It is common, it is not your fault, and it responds to support. You don’t have to wait until it gets worse to say something.

Feel Your Best, Give Your Best. You Matter Too.

Joy is small right now. That’s not a downgrade. That’s what fits. Save this. Notice one thing today. That’s the whole practice.

If you want a gentle structure for practicing exactly this, the free 5-Day Challenge gives you one small thing a day. And if you’d like to feel a little more like yourself in what you’re wearing while you do it, the free Postpartum Lookbook is yours.

You’re not missing joy, mama. You’re finding it in a new size.
