If breastfeeding has a cheat code in the wardrobe, it is the wrap silhouette. The front opens completely, with no buttons to fumble and no hem to hike. The tie waist adjusts to wherever your body is this week. And the crossover cut is forgiving of the middle in a way almost nothing else is, which matters in a season when your shape can change between Monday and Friday.
A wrap top takes all of that and makes it everyday. A wrap dress is an occasion solution (I covered that formula, in its dressier form, here), but the wrap top is quieter and more universal: it goes with denim, with linen, with skirts, with shorts, and it turns feeding into a two-second adjustment instead of a wardrobe negotiation. In summer, when layers are not an option and heat makes everything harder, that built-in access does the work a cardigan would normally do.
One good wrap top is genuinely enough. Choose a soft, breathable fabric with a secure tie, in a color you would wear three times a week, because you will.
Below are ten summer outfits built around that one top. Each works for nursing, works for the body you have today, and holds up to whatever the day decides to become. None of them are theoretical; every combination has been tested through real feeds, real errands, and real heat.
1. With High-Waisted Linen Trousers and Flat Sandals
A wrap top tucked loosely into the waistband of high-waisted linen trousers is the smart-casual summer outfit that handles almost every kind of day. The linen breathes. The wrap top adjusts. The whole combination moves with you from morning to evening without requiring attention.
I picked up a pair of high-waisted linen trousers from J.Crew last summer in a soft sand colour and they’ve been in rotation since. Pair them with the wrap top in something neutral (ivory, soft black) or a small print if your trousers are plain. Flat sandals or espadrilles. A simple crossbody. This is the outfit that will be there for you, looking right, every single time you reach for it.
2. With Denim Shorts and White Trainers
Tucked into denim shorts with the ties sitting neatly at the waist, a wrap top becomes a casual summer outfit with considerably more personality than the standard tee-and-shorts combination. The crossover front adds visual interest. The wrap silhouette quietly elevates the whole look above its actual effort level.
White trainers keep it grounded and easy. A minimal crossbody or a canvas tote. Sunglasses, a pair of small earrings. Feed your baby, retie the wrap in three seconds, continue with the day. This is the outfit that takes the guesswork out of the casual end of your summer wardrobe.
3. With a Flowy Midi Skirt and Block-Heeled Mules
Pair your wrap top with a flowy midi skirt in a complementary colour or a subtle print and block-heeled mules for an outfit that sits comfortably in the dressed-up-casual territory that most summer occasions occupy. The wrap top provides the structure at the top half. The midi skirt provides the movement and femininity below. Together they create a silhouette that is balanced, flattering, and genuinely lovely to wear.
Reformation’s printed midi skirts are exactly the brief here. This is the lunch outfit, the visit-somewhere-that-requires-effort outfit, the I-want-to-feel-like-myself-today outfit. The wrap opens when you need it to. The skirt stays completely composed throughout.
4. With Wide-Leg Linen Pants and a Straw Hat
A wrap top with wide-leg linen pants and a wide-brimmed straw hat is an outfit that reads as unhurried and sun-soaked in the best possible way. Like someone who has been to a warm place recently and brought the sensibility back with them. The linen and the wrap fabric move together in the heat. The straw hat adds shade and intention.
Everlane’s wide-leg linen pants are my go-to here. Flat leather sandals or slides, a woven bag, a pair of earrings that catch the light. This is not an outfit for a day that requires urgency. Wear it on the days that don’t. (More spring and summer linen formulas here.)
5. With Tailored Bermuda Shorts and Loafers
Wrap top with tailored Bermuda shorts and loafers is the summer combination that edges closest to a polished, professional appearance without sacrificing any of the comfort or nursing practicality of the rest of this list. The Bermuda shorts in a neutral linen or cotton bring the structure. The loafers bring the finish. The wrap top holds it all together with its adaptable, forgiving silhouette.
J.Crew’s tailored Bermuda shorts in stone or navy are the version I keep recommending. This outfit works for a casual workplace, a meeting that matters, or any occasion where you want to look like you have it under control without wearing anything that makes the day harder.

Honest and kind. It has looked at thousands of garments.
6. Under an Open Blazer With Straight-Leg Jeans
A wrap top under an open linen or cotton blazer with straight-leg jeans is the outfit that feels most like a previous version of yourself. The one who got dressed for a day that involved offices and lunch reservations and places worth going. The blazer adds the structure and formality that the wrap top alone might not quite reach. The jeans keep the whole look accessible and real.
The wrap opens for nursing while the blazer remains in place on your shoulders, framing everything with an air of complete composure that you may or may not feel on the inside. Either way, the outfit holds. (Return-to-work specific outfits in the winter version here.)
7. With a Printed Maxi Skirt and Flat Sandals
A solid-coloured wrap top, in ivory, black, terracotta, or soft sage, paired with a boldly printed maxi skirt and flat sandals is the combination that demonstrates exactly how versatile a simple wrap top can be. The solid top anchors the print. The print gives the outfit its whole identity.
Sezane’s printed maxi skirts are my favourite here, especially in summer florals. The maxi length adds elegance and keeps you cool in genuine summer heat. Minimal jewellery, a simple bag, and the confidence that comes from wearing a print you genuinely love. When it is time to feed, the wrap top does what it always does (opens, adjusts, closes) while the maxi skirt stays completely undisturbed below.
8. With Bike Shorts and a Long Open Cardigan
For the high-movement days, the playground, the long walk, the afternoon that turns out to involve considerably more crouching and lifting than anticipated, a wrap top with bike shorts and a longline open cardigan is the most practical combination on this list without looking like it is trying to be.
The cardigan adds length and coverage. The bike shorts provide the confidence to move freely. The wrap top handles the nursing logistics in between. Chunky trainers or flat trainers, a practical bag, hair secured. This is the outfit that keeps up with whatever the day decides to become.

9. With a Satin Slip Skirt and Fine Gold Chains
A jersey wrap top in a neutral (black, white, or a deep jewel tone) with a satin slip skirt and layered fine gold chains is the evening outfit that requires no additional effort beyond what you have already done. The wrap top and the slip skirt share a quality of soft, draped elegance that makes them natural companions. The gold chains do the lifting, adding light and luxury to a combination that is already doing a great deal.
Reformation’s bias-cut satin slip skirts are the version that works hardest here. Strappy flat or heeled sandals depending on how your feet are feeling. This is the dinner outfit, the celebration outfit, the you-still-show-up-for-yourself outfit. (For more evening event ideas in colder months, this winter wedding piece is the sister post.)
10. With Linen Shorts and a Kimono on Top
Pair your wrap top with linen shorts for a lightweight, breathable summer base. The wrap provides the nursing access, the shorts provide the freedom of movement. Layer a printed kimono on top when you want an extra dimension of style or coverage.
Sezane’s lightweight printed kimonos float over the whole combination, adding colour and personality without adding warmth. This is the outfit for the days when the base of wrap top and shorts feels too simple and you want something more, but you don’t want to rethink the whole thing from scratch. The kimono solves it in one layer.
The Nursing Mama Fashion Commandments
Twelve rules I wish someone had told me postpartum. Print them. Screenshot them. Live by them.
- Nursing bra always. Regular bras become instruments of pain the day letdown surprises you.
- Nursing pads on your body + a spare pair in your bag. Every single time you leave the house. No exceptions.
- Extra top in your bag — for YOU, not the baby. Because leaks, spit-up, and coffee-spills don’t care about your outfit plan.
- If it takes more than 5 minutes to figure out how to nurse or pump in it, it’s not the right outfit today. Feeding access is comfort. Comfort is not optional.
- Belt under the bust (empire) or below the belly with drape — never at the belly button. Your postpartum body deserves flattery, not compression.
- Comfortable waistband is non-negotiable. Elastic, wrap, or pull-on. Zippers are a Sunday-only luxury for now.
- Dark tones, prints, or textures — not thin light solids. Because letdown marks are real and you deserve clothes that don’t advertise them.
- Machine-washable everything. Dry-clean is not real-mama fashion. If it can’t survive a spit-up rinse, it’s not in rotation.
- Cross-body bag only. Hands stay free for the carrier, the toddler, the coffee, the door, the meltdown.
- Comfortable shoes always. You’re carrying a car seat and a diaper bag. This is not the season for a heel you can’t run in.
- Get dressed BEFORE the kids see you if you can. It changes the whole day — for them and for you.
- One accessory — earrings, a lip color, a scarf — counts as “put together.” That’s the whole game. You get to feel like yourself again.
On Things You Can Rely On
Early motherhood is not short of things that require your complete attention and constant adaptation. The feeding schedule that changes just as you have learned it. The nap that arrives early or not at all. The plan that dissolves before midday. The version of the day you expected and the version you actually get.
In the middle of all of that, a wardrobe built around pieces you can trust is not a luxury. It is a small but genuine form of stability. A layer of predictability in a season that has very little.
Your wrap top will open when you need it to. It will look right when you need it to. It will be there in the wardrobe tomorrow, ready for whatever tomorrow turns out to be. (If you still have maternity pieces to repurpose for this season, here’s the companion guide.)
In this season especially, reliable is everything.
