Winter Wedding Guest Dresses You Can Breastfeed In: 8 Warm Shapes That Open

From the comments under the fall wedding post: “Buttons, zips and tight waistbands are painful, and every winter dress I own has all three.” A winter wedding with a nursing baby asks the most of a wardrobe: it has to be warm, it has to be dressy, and it has to open at the front fast, in a cold church or a hotel corridor, with one hand.

I know the version of this day where you spend it in the coat. I have stood at the back of a December reception in my coat because the dress under it did not open and the room was too cold to sit in a toilet with the baby, bouncing her through the speeches, smiling at people and wondering why I had come. That is the day I decided the dress would open or I would not wear it, and I have dressed for every cold wedding since by that one rule.

These are the eight winter shapes that pass it: warm enough for the day, dressed enough for the room, and open at the front under a coat that also opens. Deep colours, because winter light is kind to burgundy, forest, navy and plum and unkind to black on a tired face. Flat shoes, because you will be swaying a baby in a corridor for at least one course.

dresses to wear for Winter wedding when breastfeeding

1. The long-sleeved knit wrap dress

The warmest dress that still opens without a button. A knit with weight, a tie at the side that sits where your waist is this month, a V neckline that pulls aside over a clip tank. Burgundy or forest with tall boots and a camel coat is the whole outfit.

Under it, a thermal clip-down nursing tank and opaque tights. Ten more ways to wear a wrap dress if this becomes the one you reach for all winter.

2. The velvet midi with a wrap front

Velvet is the winter wedding fabric: warm, forgiving through the middle, and it photographs like effort. A wrap or faux-wrap front gives you the opening; a midi length with tights keeps you warm; deep green, plum or navy keeps you kind to yourself in the pictures.

A velvet dress wants very little else: a pashmina, flat boots or a low heel, small earrings. Let the fabric do the work.

3. The button-front midi in heavy crepe

A shirt-dress shape in a heavy crepe or a wool blend, buttoned all the way, with a belt. The most honest access there is, and it looks like a dress rather than a shirt because of the weight of the fabric. Navy with a burgundy scarf, or black if black is yours.

A long-sleeved nursing tee under it on the coldest days; the buttons open over it and the tee lifts.

4. The sweater dress with a wide neck, sized up

A fine or chunky knit dress, bought a size up so the hem lifts and the neck pulls aside over a clip tank. Oat or grey with knee boots and a long scarf is the comfortable winter wedding, and it is what I would wear to a relaxed afternoon ceremony with a reception in a pub.

Eight winter outfits built on one chunky knit show how a knit dresses up.

5. The slip dress under a wool blazer

The evening answer. A satin slip in bronze, deep rose or ink under a tailored wool blazer: the strap slips off one shoulder over a strapless or clip bra, and the blazer is both warmth and cover. Midi length, tights, a low heel if you want one.

Keep the blazer on in photographs and the church, off at the table. Eight winter outfits around a blazer and a coat if you want the layering worked out.

6. The two-piece: a wrap top and a long skirt

A wrap top in velvet or a fine knit over a long pleated or fluid skirt, with a soft waist. Everything opens at the front, nothing sits on the middle, and the two pieces are four outfits after the wedding. Burgundy top, navy skirt, camel coat, flat boots.

This is the one I would choose if I did not know how my body would feel on the day. Every part of it adjusts.

7. The empire-waist dress in a long sleeve

The empire line sits under the chest and falls away from everything you are not sure about, and in winter it comes with long sleeves and a buttoned or wrap bodice for the opening. Plum crepe or navy velvet, with a pashmina and flat shoes with some polish.

Nine breastfeeding-friendly looks for winter formal events if the wedding is black tie.

8. The knit column dress with a cardigan

A straight knit dress, no waist at all, in a dark colour, with a long open cardigan or a cape over it. The dress lifts or the neck pulls aside; the cardigan is the cover and the warmth. It is the least fussy thing on this list and it works for a city hall wedding in January as well as anything.

A long scarf in a colour that lifts it (rust with navy, camel with black), tall boots, done.

The coat, the tights, the shoes

The coat is the piece you feed under, so it must open fully at the front and drape softly over a small head: a wool coat in camel or navy, a size that closes over the knit. Never a zip, never a coat that pulls over the head. Opaque tights or fleece-lined tights with every midi here. A pashmina large enough to be shoulders in the church, cover at the table and blanket in the pram.

Flat boots or a low block heel. You will stand through the photographs, sway through a course and walk the corridor at least once. Your feet should not be another thing to get through.

The reason I write these posts is that I remember the back of that December room so clearly: the coat on, the baby bouncing, the sense of being on the edge of a day I should have been inside. A dress that opens is not a fashion choice. It is the difference between attending a wedding and watching one. You deserve to be inside the room.

If you want these shapes on a body, the Year Round Capsule has the knit wrap dress and the button-front dress laid out and worn through the cold months, and three pictures of you in them are on the house. If the dress you are looking at online might or might not open, Will it feed tells you from a screenshot, free. And if you want the whole outfit chosen from your own closet on the morning, that is Anah inside the Atelier.

Choose the dress that opens. Take the coat off. Stay for the speeches. The focus is on you, mama.
