A mama wrote to me at six weeks: “I have a closet full of clothes and three things I actually wear. Can you just tell me what to buy so it all works together?” I can, because after three babies I have built this list for myself three times, and the third time I wrote it down. Twelve pieces. Every top opens for a feed. Every bottom forgives a waist that changes by the week. Every piece goes with every other, which is where the thirty outfits come from.
This post is the list, the rules that chose it, and all thirty outfits written out so you can wear them in order and never decide. Then the swap rules, because you own more of this than you think and the point is not to buy twelve things; it is to own twelve that work. The DIY breastfeeding capsule is the method behind it; this is the method already done.
The rules that chose the twelve
Every top opens by one of the three mechanics: lift, pull aside, unfasten. Every bottom has a soft high waist. Every colour comes from a palette of six, three neutrals and three colours, so any piece goes with any other. Nothing is a nursing label; all of it is clothes. And two of everything that touches the leak, so one is always clean. The seven-item fourth trimester checklist is the first-weeks version; this is the whole first year.
The four tops
1. A clip-down tank in black, the layer under everything. 2. A striped boat-neck tee, which pulls aside. 3. An oversized white shirt, which unfastens and is also a layer. 4. A fine knit in your colour with a V or wide neck, which pulls aside or lifts.
The three bottoms
5. Soft straight jeans with a stretch waistband, in this month’s size. 6. Wide-leg trousers with a wide elastic band, black or navy. 7. A stretch midi skirt with a wide waist, in a neutral or a small print. Beyond maternity leggings is why these three and not six pairs of leggings.

From the capsules
The Year Round Capsule
Two hundred nursing-friendly outfits from fifty-six pieces, fifty for every season, laid out and then worn. $29 once, yours to keep.
The two dresses
8. A jersey wrap dress in a colour, which ties where the waist is and opens for the feed. 9. A shirt dress in a neutral, which buttons, belts and layers over the trousers as a duster.
The two layers and the coat
10. A long cardigan in a neutral, the line and the cover. 11. A blazer or a relaxed jacket, for the day you need to be taken seriously. 12. A coat that closes over a carrier: a long wool coat or a trench, in a colour that goes with all eleven. The cardigan method is why the tenth piece earns its place every day.

The swap rules
You do not need to buy the twelve. Go through the closet with the list and the three questions: does it open, does the waist forgive, is it in the palette. Anything that passes takes the place of the piece on the list. Most mamas own six or seven of the twelve already; the ones usually missing are the tank, the wide-band trousers and the wrap dress. Audit the pre-pregnancy closet is how to do the walk-through kindly.
The Nursing Mama Fashion Commandments
Twelve rules I wish someone had told me postpartum. Print them. Screenshot them. Live by them.
- Nursing bra always. Regular bras become instruments of pain the day letdown surprises you.
- Nursing pads on your body + a spare pair in your bag. Every single time you leave the house. No exceptions.
- Extra top in your bag — for YOU, not the baby. Because leaks, spit-up, and coffee-spills don’t care about your outfit plan.
- If it takes more than 5 minutes to figure out how to nurse or pump in it, it’s not the right outfit today. Feeding access is comfort. Comfort is not optional.
- Belt under the bust (empire) or below the belly with drape — never at the belly button. Your postpartum body deserves flattery, not compression.
- Comfortable waistband is non-negotiable. Elastic, wrap, or pull-on. Zippers are a Sunday-only luxury for now.
- Dark tones, prints, or textures — not thin light solids. Because letdown marks are real and you deserve clothes that don’t advertise them.
- Machine-washable everything. Dry-clean is not real-mama fashion. If it can’t survive a spit-up rinse, it’s not in rotation.
- Cross-body bag only. Hands stay free for the carrier, the toddler, the coffee, the door, the meltdown.
- Comfortable shoes always. You’re carrying a car seat and a diaper bag. This is not the season for a heel you can’t run in.
- Get dressed BEFORE the kids see you if you can. It changes the whole day — for them and for you.
- One accessory — earrings, a lip color, a scarf — counts as “put together.” That’s the whole game. You get to feel like yourself again.
By season
The twelve are the year-round core. Winter adds a chunky knit and long boots; summer swaps the knit for a linen shirt and the jeans for tailored shorts. The seasonal capsules are the full versions: winter, fall, summer, and the DIY breastfeeding capsule for building your own from scratch.
The mama with three things she wore went through her closet with the list and found eight of the twelve already there. She bought the tank, the trousers, the wrap dress and the cardigan, and wrote the thirty on a note on her phone. She told me she had worn outfit seventeen to a job interview and outfit twenty-three to a christening, and that nobody had guessed they were the same closet.
The Year Round Capsule is this idea taken to two hundred outfits from fifty-six pieces, laid out and then worn, with three pictures of you in them on the house. The Twelve will build a twelve-piece list like this one from your own closet, free. And The Sunday Reset will pick which seven of the thirty you wear this week.
Twelve pieces. Thirty outfits. Every one opens. The focus is on you, mama.
