One of the mamas I interviewed for the Back to Work capsule put it exactly like this: “I have a closet full of work clothes and not one of them opens.” The return to work is the moment the old wardrobe fails most completely. The blouses zip at the back. The dresses pull over the head. The trousers have a waistband that was never asked to sit above a scar. And you are expected to walk into a meeting at nine looking like the person who left, with a pump in your bag and twenty minutes to find somewhere to use it.

I work from home, which means my version of this is the kitchen table, the camera on from the chest up, and a baby asleep on the floor beside me for exactly as long as the call lasts. But when I sat down with mamas before building the work capsule, the stories were the same in every office: the locked room, the twenty minutes, the blouse that had to come off entirely, the colleague who knocked. One of them said she had bought a whole new work wardrobe and none of it opened, because nobody had told her that was the question to ask.

So here is the question, asked of every piece. These are the ten work pieces that open, lift or clip, that look like a professional in a meeting and not like a nursing mama in a nursing top, in colours that read as polished on four hours of sleep. Together they make a month of outfits. You will own some of them already; the ones you are missing are ordinary enough to find in any shop at any price.

1. The clip-down camisole, two of them

The piece under every other piece. A smooth clip-down nursing camisole in ivory and in black, long enough to tuck into a high waist. It is what lets a blouse unbutton and a knit lift without anything else coming off, and it holds a pad flat under silk.

Buy two before anything else. Everything below assumes you are wearing one.

2. The button-front shirt, ivory and striped

A crisp shirt is the most professional thing that opens. Three buttons from the top is a pump; done up and tucked, it is a meeting. One in ivory, one in a fine stripe, and they carry half the week between them.

Eight office outfits around one button-down shirt if you want to see the range in a single piece.

3. The wrap top in burgundy

A wrap opens at the front with no button and ties where your waist is this week. In a weighted jersey or fine knit it reads as a blouse; in burgundy it is the colour that makes a tired face look rested under office light. Over the camisole, with trousers or the pencil skirt.

This is the top for the day with the big meeting, because it looks like effort and asks for none.

4. The silk blouse that buttons

For the dressy day: a silk or satin blouse with a front placket, in ivory or soft blush, loosely tucked. It opens like a shirt and photographs like an occasion. Silk shows a leak, so this is the piece the camisole and a fresh pad are for.

Seven dressy work outfits around a silk blouse if your weeks have client dinners in them.

5. The fine knit with a wide neck

One knit for the cold office, in ivory or camel, with a neck wide enough to pull aside or a hem that lifts over the camisole. Fine rather than chunky, so it sits under the blazer and does not add bulk through the middle you are not sure about yet.

Size up if the old one pulls across the chest. The shape comes from the fit, not from being small.

6. The tailored blazer, worn open

The blazer is the piece that makes everything else look employed, and it is the layer that stays on while you pump. Navy or camel, cut to sit easily over the knit, never buttoned. Shoulders back, lanyard on, done.

Ten pumping-friendly work outfits around one tailored blazer show how far it goes.

7. Straight trousers with a forgiving waist

Charcoal or navy, straight leg, a waistband that is tailored at the front and soft at the back, sitting above the scar and never rolling. Buy them in the size you are this month. They take every top above and they are the trousers that make a wrap top look like a decision.

Nine work outfits around one pair of wide-leg trousers if you prefer a wider leg; the rule is the same.

8. The knit pencil skirt

A pencil skirt in a knit with a wide, soft, high waistband is the one skirt a pumping mama can wear all day: it sits above the scar, moves with you, and looks sharp with the shirt or the wrap. Navy or charcoal, knee length, with tights in winter.

Eight nursing-friendly office outfits around one pencil skirt if you doubt a skirt can be the easy option.

9. The wrap dress

One dress for the days you want one piece and no waistband. A wrap dress in a weighted jersey, navy or burgundy, knee or midi, with a cardigan or the blazer over it. It ties where you are and opens at the front without a button, which makes it the fastest pump on this list.

Eight office outfits around one wrap dress if it becomes the Monday dress.

10. Loafers, and a bag that holds the pump without looking like it

Flat loafers or a low block heel you can walk the corridor in. A structured tote in a dark leather or faux leather that holds the pump, the bottles and the cooler bag and still looks like a work bag, with a crossbody inside it for the things you actually need to hand.

Ten pieces, two camisoles, one blazer, two bottoms, one dress. Together they make a month of outfits that all open, and every one is laid out and then worn, with a note on how it opens for the pump, in the Back to Work Capsule, where there are two hundred of them across the seasons.

The twenty-minute pump, and what to wear for it

Whatever you are wearing at eleven should open in under ten seconds with one hand, without anything coming over your head, and close again in the same time. Shirt buttons, wrap ties, a knit over a camisole, a blazer that never came off. Keep a spare camisole and a spare pad in the bag, because the day you need them is the day of the client meeting.

And say the sentence to whoever manages the room: “I pump at eleven and at three, I need the room for twenty minutes each.” Nobody has ever said no to the mamas I spoke to. Most were relieved to be asked plainly.

The mama who bought a whole new work wardrobe that did not open was not careless. Nobody told her the question. That is why I write these: so the question is asked before the shopping, not after. Does it open? Does it sit above the scar? Does it come off with one hand while the other holds a pump? Ten pieces that pass are worth more than a closet that does not.

If you want the outfits already decided, the Back to Work Capsule has two hundred of them laid out and worn across the year, every one with how it opens, and three pictures of you in them are on the house. If you would rather someone chose each morning’s outfit from your own wardrobe and knew the difference between a Tuesday and a presentation, that is Anah inside the Atelier. If the blouse you are looking at online might or might not open, Will it feed tells you from a screenshot, free.

You left for a while and you came back someone slightly different. Dress her, not the person who left. The focus is on you, mama.
