The pencil skirt is the polished office classic. The tops you wear with it are where the nursing access lives.
This post gives you eight ways to wear one pencil skirt with nursing-friendly tops, so the skirt you already own can carry a full work week without a single adjustment.
Why the pencil skirt works even for nursing moms
The pencil skirt itself does not need to change for nursing. It is below the waist. It stays put. The work happens above the waist, and which top you choose determines whether the outfit is nursing-friendly.
Pair a pencil skirt with a front-access top and you have a polished office look that reads exactly like your old office looks. Zero adjustment needed.
That is a quiet relief in a season when so much else has changed. One piece in your closet that still works the way it always did.
Outfit 1: silk wrap blouse + pencil skirt + heels
A silk wrap blouse tucked into the pencil skirt. Heels.
The wrap opens for nursing. The skirt stays put. Classic and pulled-together, and the tie gives you a waist without a belt.
Outfit 2: silk cami + blazer + pencil skirt
A silk cami tucked into the pencil skirt, with a blazer over top. Heels or loafers.
The cami pulls down for nursing under the blazer. Structured and polished, and the fastest access on this list.
Outfit 3: button-down + pencil skirt
A tucked-in button-down with the pencil skirt. Heels. Roll the sleeves.
Classic. Timeless. Nursing-friendly by design, because buttons were always going to be the easiest answer.
Outfit 4: fitted turtleneck + pencil skirt (winter)
A fitted turtleneck tucked into the pencil skirt. Tall boots or heels.
The turtleneck lifts from the waist for nursing. Wear a nursing cami underneath and the lift takes two seconds.
Outfit 5: sleeveless blouse + pencil skirt (summer)
A sleeveless silk blouse tucked into the pencil skirt. Heels or a pointed flat.
Cool and polished for summer offices, with nothing extra sitting on your shoulders in the heat.
Outfit 6: fine-knit sweater + pencil skirt + tall boot
A fine-knit sweater over a nursing tank, with the pencil skirt and tall boots.
Cozy but structured. The sweater lifts, the tank pulls down, and the skirt keeps the whole look sharp.

Honest and kind. It has looked at thousands of garments.
Outfit 7: silk button-down + pencil skirt (dressy)
A silk button-down tucked into the pencil skirt. Heels.
Elevated. Reads meeting-ready before you have said a word, which is useful on the mornings you are running on very little.
Outfit 8: cashmere V-neck + pencil skirt + loafer
Cashmere V-neck over a nursing tank, with the pencil skirt and loafers.
Comfortable but polished. This is the outfit for the long day with back-to-back meetings and a pump session squeezed in between.
How to buy a pencil skirt that fits a postpartum body
Look for a stretch fabric (ponte or a wool blend with a little lycra), a mid-to-high rise that sits above the belly, a length that hits at the knee or just below, and a hidden side zip rather than a back zip, because sitting is easier without a back zip.
Try it on sitting down. If it rides up, size up. A skirt you spend the day tugging back into place is a skirt you will stop wearing by week three.
Check the vent at the back while you walk. A vent that is too short restricts your stride, and a vent that is too long gapes when you sit.
What to wear underneath (comfortable and supportive)
A high-waist shaping short if you want smoothing, and nothing tight. Compression that fights you all day is not worth the smoother line.
Comfortable underwear that does not sit on a c-section scar. This is not a small detail. A waistband on that line will ruin an otherwise good day.
A slip if the skirt fabric is thin, especially in lighter colors where a seam shows.

Pick any three things from your wardrobe. Anah shows you nine ways to wear them.

Free. Every top it suggests opens for a feed.
How to make one pencil skirt look like several
Change the shoe first. Heels make it formal, tall boots make it seasonal, loafers make it business casual, and the skirt has not moved.

From the capsules
The Back to Work Capsule
Two hundred workday outfits, every top opening for the eleven o'clock pump. $27 once, yours to keep.
See the capsuleChange the tuck second. A full tuck with a belt is sharp, and a soft sweater left slightly loose over the waistband is relaxed.
Change the top layer last. A blazer, a long cardigan, and no layer at all give you three completely different silhouettes from the same base.
Between those three variables you have a full month before anyone could reasonably notice a repeat.
Nursing tops that pair best with a structured skirt
Wrap tops, because the tie sits above the waistband and never competes with it. A wrap plus a pencil skirt is the cleanest line you can get.
Camis and shells, because they tuck flat. Anything with a thick hem or a ribbed band creates a ridge under a fitted skirt.
Fine-knit sweaters rather than chunky ones. A chunky knit over a pencil skirt makes the proportions feel top-heavy, and a fine knit keeps the silhouette long.
Button-downs in a slightly longer cut, so the tuck holds when you sit and stand a dozen times a day.
Colors and fabrics that hold up to a full week
Navy, charcoal, black, and camel are the four that will do the most work. Any of them pairs with every top on this list.
Ponte is the most forgiving fabric here. It stretches, it recovers, and it does not wrinkle in a chair, which matters when you are sitting for pump sessions on top of a normal work day.
A wool blend looks the most expensive and needs the least maintenance between wears. Steam it, hang it properly, and it will look new for years.
Avoid thin unlined polyester in a light color. It clings, it shows every line, and it will make you self-conscious in a season when you have enough to think about.
The Nursing Mama Fashion Commandments
Twelve rules I wish someone had told me postpartum. Print them. Screenshot them. Live by them.
- Nursing bra always. Regular bras become instruments of pain the day letdown surprises you.
- Nursing pads on your body + a spare pair in your bag. Every single time you leave the house. No exceptions.
- Extra top in your bag — for YOU, not the baby. Because leaks, spit-up, and coffee-spills don’t care about your outfit plan.
- If it takes more than 5 minutes to figure out how to nurse or pump in it, it’s not the right outfit today. Feeding access is comfort. Comfort is not optional.
- Belt under the bust (empire) or below the belly with drape — never at the belly button. Your postpartum body deserves flattery, not compression.
- Comfortable waistband is non-negotiable. Elastic, wrap, or pull-on. Zippers are a Sunday-only luxury for now.
- Dark tones, prints, or textures — not thin light solids. Because letdown marks are real and you deserve clothes that don’t advertise them.
- Machine-washable everything. Dry-clean is not real-mama fashion. If it can’t survive a spit-up rinse, it’s not in rotation.
- Cross-body bag only. Hands stay free for the carrier, the toddler, the coffee, the door, the meltdown.
- Comfortable shoes always. You’re carrying a car seat and a diaper bag. This is not the season for a heel you can’t run in.
- Get dressed BEFORE the kids see you if you can. It changes the whole day — for them and for you.
- One accessory — earrings, a lip color, a scarf — counts as “put together.” That’s the whole game. You get to feel like yourself again.
