A friend said this to me as the heating went on: “It’s getting cold, and every warm thing I own goes over my head.” The cardigan is the first answer to that, before the clip tank, before anything you have to buy. Buttoned to the middle it is a sweater. Unbuttoned from the bottom it is a feed, with the top still closed and your shoulders still warm. I did a whole second winter in three cardigans and did not once feed on a cold bench with a jumper round my neck.

10. The cream cardigan under a black blazer with white trousers

The cream cardigan with black trim under a black blazer, white trousers, black heeled boots, the striped scarf. Ten cardigans, and the thing I want you to notice is that none of them is a nursing cardigan. The ordinary one from before, buttoned to the middle, is already the best nursing layer you own. Add a clip tank under it for the days you want the top half covered too, and the cold months stop being the hard ones.
